Sony Open

This annual event in January brings the world's top golfers to Oahu.

Every January, the PGA TOUR tees off at Waialae Country Club just minutes from Waikiki.

The Sony Open in Hawaii is the golf tournament in Hawaii, attracting big-name PGA stars and top international pros. The $5.6 million purse doesn’t hurt. Neither does the sunshine.

Started in 1965 as the Hawaiian Open, the tournament is legendary for giving the Islands’ best golfers a shot at history. Two locals have gone all the way: Ted Makalena captured victory in 1966 and David Ishii bested the field in 1990. Who’s next?

In addition to being the first full-field PGA tournament of the calendar year, the Sony Open is also the largest charity golf event in the state, having raised over $14 million for Friends of Hawaii Charities.
