Fifty-three exhibits shed light on the wondrous world below the waves. Jet Set, for example, focuses on marine animals such as the nautilus and octopus, which move about via jet propulsion. At Corals Are Alive! you’ll discover that corals are living animals that grow, reproduce, and build their own skeletons.
The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands display calls attention to the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, the largest single area dedicated to conservation in the United States. In this 4,000-gallon tank are table corals, Hawaiian morwongs and other species that are abundant in that isolated region but absent or rarely seen around the main Hawaiian islands.
Activities and classes, some geared for kids, are offered throughout the year. For example, you can Meet the Monk Seals; wade into the ocean to search for snoozing fish and nocturnal crabs, lobsters, eels and octopuses during Exploring the Reef at Night; and venture Behind the Scenes to view the backs of exhibits, see the hale (house) where sea jellies are raised, find out what food different animals eat and much more.
