Kaupo Gap Trail, Haleakala Crater

A challenging trek with breathtaking views

Another expedition that proves suitable for experienced hikers, the Kaupo Gap Trail can be accessed two ways depending on where one begins the hike.

A popular 8.3 mile route takes travelers “out of the Gap” from the Paliku Cabin within Haleakala National Park. This particular path runs downhill through lava formations and various patches of vegetation and dry brush that include native forests and clusters of Kiawe wood. Midway through the hike, the trail departs from the Park boundary and into property owned by the Kaupo Ranch.

While passing through the ranch, those on the expedition are treated to serene, rolling pastures that descend steeply to the rugged coastline and spectacular views of some of Maui’s remaining undeveloped terrain along the South coast.
