In the late 1880s, the H.N. Greenwell Store was the Walmart of up-country Kona.
Entrepreneur Henry Nicholas Greenwell built the 1,000-square-foot general store in 1870 and filled it with everything from castor oil and calico to coffee and crochet yarn to meet the needs of the large farming and ranching community.
Thanks to the Kona Historical Society, the old general store has been restored and restocked with accurate reproductions of merchandise customers would’ve bought there nearly 150 years ago.
Every detail has been researched and re-created, right down to the labels on the tin cans and the period costumes the clerks are wearing.
