Event Details

This is the hula event of the year. Hula practitioners and enthusiasts from around the world gather annually to celebrate King Kalakaua, who is credited with the revitalization of the hula, mele (song), oli (chant), and other Hawaiian arts.

The weeklong event and competition kick off with a hoolaulea (parade/celebration), and parade through downtown Hilo.

The festivities also include a craft fair, live music and dancing.

Three exciting nights of hula competition follows and will bring the best hula halau from around the islands to the Edith Kanaka‘ole Stadium stage, a venue built especially for this event.

The pageantry of the festival serves to perpetuate the vibrancy of the Hawaiian culture.
